The Tibetan
flag has a variety of components, each with their own significant meaning and
relation to the land, culture and people of Tibet. The yellow that borders
three-sides of the flag symbolises the prominence of the Buddha’s teachings in
Tibet. While the yellow sun in the centre portrays the prosperity, freedom and
happiness of its people. Surrounding the sun are six red bands and six dark
blue bands, the dark blue depicts the Tibetan sky, while the red bands are
representative of the six ancestral Tibetan tribes. These tribes are named Se,
Mu, Dong, Tong, Dru an Ra. Together the 12 blue and red bands represent the
following of the Tibetan virtues including protection and spiritual teachings.
The white triangle below the sun represents a snowy mountain, with the nation
of Tibet commonly being referred to as the Land Surrounded by Snow Mountains.
Inside of this are two snow lions, and two jewels. The snow lions are
symbolistic of fearlessness, the nation's spirit as well as secular life. The
top three-coloured jewel portrays the Tibetan people's respect for the Buddha,
Dharma and Sangha. While the bottom depicts self-discipline and behaviour and
decisions that are ethical.
Tibet is an
autonomous region of China located in Central Asia. To the north and east are
other regions of China. While to the south are the nations of Nepal, India,
Bhutan and Myanmar and to the east the Indian region of Kashmir. The location
of Tibet has resulted in the nation having an average elevation of over 4,000
metres, featuring the Himalayan mountain ranges. Tibet has an area of over 1.2
million kilometres squared and the capital city is Lhasa. Tibet is home to
around 3.6 million people, with most of the population speaking Tibetan, which
is also the official language. Furthermore 80%-90% of the population follow the
religion of Tibetan Buddhism. Tibet’s high altitude, central location, glaciers
and snow melt, have resulted in the Tibetan plateau feeding a large number of
Asia’s major rivers including the Yangtse, Yellow, Mekong and Ganges rivers,
along with many more.
