The current
edition of the Nepali flag was adopted on the 16th of December 1962,
after removing faces that were originally on the moon and sun. Nepal’s national
flag is unique in that it is the only country flag, which is non-quadrilateral,
with it instead being composed of two right-angle triangles of varying sizes,
with one on top of the other. These triangles have two fitting meanings,
representing the major religions of Nepal, Buddhism and Hinduism, as well as
the Himalayan Mountains. The entire flag is surrounded by a dark blue border,
which represents the peace and harmony of the nation and its people. Most of
the flag is crimson red in colour and is symbolistic of the strength and
bravery of Nepalese people, fittingly it is also the national colour of Nepal.
The flag features two symbols, the moon in the top triangle and the sun in the
bottom, which are both white in colour and represent the nation's longevity.
The moon depicts the calmness of Nepalese people and the cool weather of the
Himalayas. Meanwhile, the sun represents the warmer temperatures of the lower
parts of Nepal.
Nepal is an
Asian nation, surrounded by India to the east, south and west and Tibet to the
north. Nepal is famous for the Himalayan Mountains and the world’s tallest
mountain Mt Everest. It is rumoured that the Himalayan Mountains are home to
the mysterious Yeti, which is based on old tales. Nepal is 147,516km2 in
area. The official language of Nepal is Nepali, with much of the population of
29.6 million people, speaking Nepali. The capital city of Nepal is Kathmandu.
Many of the Nepalese people worship the ‘Kumari’, which are young girls, who
are considered to possess sacred feminine energy, with people worshipping these
girls at things such as festivals, making Nepal the only country where one can
see a living goddess. Finally, Nepal is a wildlife haven, with around 20
national parks, wildlife reserves and conservation areas, from Chitwan National
Park in the lowlands, where Greater One-horned Rhinos, Tigers and Asian
Elephants can be found. To the mountains, where Snow Leopards, Red Panda’s and
Himalayan Tahr reside.
