NATIONAL FLAG OF GUATEMALA

GUATEMALA NATIONAL FLAG

The national flag of Guatemala has represented the nation since 1871. This flag features three vertical bands, with the two outer light blue bands symbolising the blue skies and the country’s location between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The central white stripe is representative of the important principles of peace and purity. The national emblem is located in the centre of the flag, and contains several important components, representing Guatemala’s history and beliefs. The bay laurels symbolise the nation’s victory against their oppressors, and the honour of the country is represented by the two crossing swords. Above the swords, the depiction of the nation’s ability to defend itself is portrayed by two rifles. Central to all these components is a scroll which reads, “Libertad 15 De Septiembre De 1821”, this roughly translates to the date Guatemala gained independence from Spain, the 15th of September 1821. Finally, the resplendent quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala, is placed on top of the scroll.

Guatemala is a nation located in Central America. It is located to the south of Mexico and west of the country of Honduras. To the northeast of Guatemala is Belize as well as the Gulf of Honduras. The western coastline of Guatemala is lined by the Pacific Ocean. Guatemala is approximately 108,890km2 in size and home to around 18.1 million people. With over 90% of the population speaking Spanish as their primary language, making Spanish the official language of Guatemala. However, there are also a variety of Mayan and Indigenous languages spoken by smaller percentages of the population. The nation is home to over 30 volcanoes, with only three being classified as active, these are Santiaguito, Fuego and Pacaya. As previously mentioned, the national bird of Guatemala is the resplendent quetzal, being seen as a symbol of beauty and freedom, and is of cultural significance to the Mayan and Aztec people. The capital city is Guatemala City. IT is believed that the first ever chocolate bar was created in Guatemala by the Mayans, with the Mayans calling chocolate “the food of the Gods”. The nation is still a large producer and exporter of chocolate today.
