The national
flag of French Polynesia is made up of three horizontal bands, the top and
bottom are red in colour, while the central band is white. The white band is
significantly larger than the red bands and is symbolistic of peace and purity.
The two red bands are representative of royalty, with the colours relating to a
red belt of feathers, called the maro ura worn by members of royalty. In the
centre of the flag is the coat of arms of the country and includes a
traditional Polynesian canoe, sunshine and waves. The sunshine represents life
and energy, while the waves portray the Pacific Ocean, which play an essential
role in Polynesian life. The canoe is an important symbol of traditional
Polynesian culture, symbolising communication, searching for food and
transportation. The five stick figures depict the five main groups of islands:
the Society Islands, the Austral Islands, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas
Islands and the Tuamotus. The flag was adopted on the 23rd of
November 1984.
French Polynesia
is a collection of archipelagos in the Pacific Ocean. The five archipelagos are
the Society Islands, the Austral Islands, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas
Islands and the Tuamotus Islands. The capital of Papeete is located on the
island of Tahiti, where overwater bungalows, which are a common occurrence in
many resorts around the world, originated on the island in the 1960s. The
nation has a total area of 4,167km2 and is home to around 283,000
people. The locals of the island will wear Tiare flowers behind their ears and
depending on which ear it is placed behind it indicates their relationship
status. The majority of the population speak Tahitian, which is an official
language of French Polynesia alongside French. It is believed that the word tattoo
originates from the Tahitian word “tatau”, meaning a mark on the skin.
