Finland’s national flag features a blue Nordic Cross on a white background. The Nordic Cross represents the nation’s Nordic culture, past and its location in Northern Europe. The Nordic Cross is blue in colour, symbolising the numerous lakes of Finland. While the white background portrays the white snow that covers the country during the winter. The flag was originally designed by Zacharias Topelius in 1862 but was not officially adopted until the 29^th of May 1918. There were minor changes made to the colour of the blue on the 1^st of January 1995.

Finland is a nation located in Northern Europe, to the north it is bordered by Norway and to the east Russia. To the west is Sweden and the Gulf of Bothnia, and to the south is the Gulf of Finland. It is 338,491km² in area and home to around 5.6 million people. Finland is also home to around 3.3 million saunas, meaning there is more than one for every two people, with saunas in homes, businesses, next to beautiful lakes or in the middle of a forest. Forest’s cover close to 75% of Finland, with the Finnish government and community ensuring forests are protected and cared for. The capital city of Helsinki is located in southern Finland. However, the northern Finnish region of Lapland is home to more reindeer than people, with over 200,000 reindeer residing in the Lapland region. The official languages of the nation are Finnish and Swedish.
