The national
flag of Eswatini was officially adopted on the 6th of October 1968,
following the then named Swaziland’s gaining of independence from the British
Empire. The flag features two blue bands one on the top and one on the bottom,
portraying the sky that covers the nation as well as peace and unity. There is a
red stripe between these bands which portrays the bravery and sacrifice of the
Swazi people in the country’s pursuit for independence. There are two yellow
lines that border the red stripe which represent the sun as well as hope and
optimism for the future of the nation. In the centre of the flag is a shield, a
staff and two spears. The shield symbolises the importance of protecting the
country and its people, with the spears also representing strength and power.
Eswatini is a
landlocked nation located in the southern regions of the African continent.
Eswatini is surrounded by South Africa to the north, west and south and
Mozambique to the east. It is 17,364km2 in size and home to around
1.26 million people. The nation has two official languages of Swazi and English
as well as two capitals Mbabane and Lobamba. The nation of Eswatini is ruled
under an absolute monarchy, meaning that the king has significant control over
typical government duties, this is the only remaining monarchy in Africa. In
Eswatini, the second largest monolith in the world can be found, Sibebe Rock is
second only to Uluru. Additionally, the country is home to a huge range of
wildlife with over 120 species of mammal, 500 species of bird and 100 species
of reptiles and amphibians, with the monarchy considering the protection of
wildlife a top priority. As in Eswatini, game rangers are permitted by law to
kill poachers if they are caught poaching.
