The national
flag of Equatorial Guinea, was first adopted on the 12th of October
1968, following its gaining of independence, with the coat of arms originally
absent, being added to the flag later in 1979. The flag is composed of three
horizontal bands and a triangle on the hoist side of the flag. The top green
band represents the natural environment and resources. The central stripe which
is white is symbolistic of peace, as it is in many other flags around the
world. The bottom red band depicts the blood that was lost, while fighting for
the country’s independence. Meanwhile, the blue triangle is representative of
the Atlantic Ocean that separates the mainland area of Equatorial Guinea from
its islands. In the centre of the flag is the coat of arms, which features a
silk cotton tree, six six-point stars and the nation's motto “Unidad, Paz,
Justicia”. This motto is Spanish for “Unity, Peace, Justice”, and the six stars
symbolise the nation’s five islands and its mainland area. Finally, the silk
cotton tree depicts where the first treaty between the Spanish and local rulers
was signed.
The nation of
Equatorial Guinea is located on the western coast of Africa. It consists of the
portion of the nation on continental Africa, which is surrounded by Cameroon to
the north and Gabon to the east and south. The west is lined by the Atlantic
Ocean, which also surrounds Equatorial Guinea’s five islands. These five
islands are Bioko, Corisco, Great Elobey, Little Elobey and Annobón. The entire
nation is 28,052km2 in size and home to around 1.98 million people,
with most of the population speaking Spanish. French and Portuguese are also
official languages of Equatorial Guinea. The country is the only African
country with Spanish as its official language. The capital city of Ciudad de la
Paz only recently began construction in 2017, with buildings rising out of the
rainforest and most of the city still being built, it is practically a ghost
town. On Bioko island, the town of Ureca is the wettest in Africa and of the
wettest in the world, receiving an annual average rainfall of around 11,430mm.
