The national
flag of Dominica features a dark green background which depicts the island’s
lush vegetation and forests, while the three bands that separate the flag into
quarters also have their own meanings. The yellow portrays the Carib and Arawak
people as well as the fruit the island produces. The black band is
representative of the island’s African history and its soil. The white stripe
symbolises the nation's pure water and purity in general. In the centre of the
flag is a red disk, which is said to represent social justice. Around the
inside of the circle are ten lime green stars which are symbolistic of the
island’s 10 parishes. Finally, in the centre of the central red disk is a
Sisserou Parrot, which is the national bird of Dominica. This general design of
the flag was designed by Alwin Bully and adopted on the 3rd of
November 1978, with the most recent modifications occurring on the 3rd
of November 1990.
Dominica is an
island a part of the Lesser Antilles. The islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique
are located to the north and south of the island respectively. To the east is
the Caribbean Sea and to the west the Atlantic Ocean. It is 751km2
in size, with around 80% of this area being covered by rainforests.
Furthermore, there are nine active volcanoes on the island, meaning Dominica
has the highest concentration of volcanoes out of any nation in the world. The
nation is home to around 65,500 people and the capital city is Roseau. Many
attempts were made to colonise the island by the British and French. However,
the Indigenous people of the island, the Kalinago people, resisted this
colonisation, resulting in Dominica being the last Caribbean island to be
colonised.
