Burundi National Flag
The national
flag of Burundi was adopted on the 28th of June 1967. The flag
features a white St. Andrews Cross, also referred to as a saltire, which
represents peace, alongside the white circle in the centre of the flag. Inside
of the circle are three six-point stars, which are red in colour with green borders.
These are symbolistic of the three main ethnic groups in Burundi the Twa, Hutu
and Tutsi, and the equality and harmony between the three groups. Furthermore,
the stars also depict Burundi’s national motto of ‘Unity, Work and Progress’.
The rest of the flag is split into 4 sections, with the top and bottom red in
colour, portraying the struggle that was required in Burundi’s pursuit for
independence. While the left and right sections are green, symbolistic of the
nation’s potential for progress and its fertile lands.
Burundi is an
African nation located in the eastern-central region of Africa. It is a
land-locked country, with Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east, and the
Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. Despite it being landlocked, the
large lake of Lake Tanganyika, also borders the nation. Lake Tanganyika is the
world’s longest freshwater lake and is also the world’s second deepest and is
also the second largest in terms of volume. Furthermore, the lake along with
the Rusizi River is/was home to Gustave an infamous Nile Crocodile, who is
rumoured to have killed over 300 people, with numerous attempts to capture the
crocodile. Burundi is 27,834km2 in area and home to around 14.7
million people. Most people speak Rundi, which is an official language
alongside French. The capitals of Burundi are Gitega and Bujumbura, making it
one of the few countries in the world with multiple capitals.
