Bulgaria National Flag

The national flag of Bulgaria features three horizontal bands of three different colours. The top band which is white in colour is representative of the nation’s peace, independence and freedom. The central green stripe portrays both the agricultural and natural wealth of Bulgaria. Finally, the bottom red band symbolises the strength and courage that was required in the country's struggle for independence. This design was initially adopted on the 16^th of April 1879 and was used until 1948, when the communist government came to power, adding their coat of arms to the flag. However, after the communist government lost their power, the original and current design was reinstated, occurring on the 27^th of November 1990.

Bulgaria is a nation located in the Balkan region of Europe. To the north of Bulgaria is Romania and to the east the Black Sea. It is also surrounded by Turkey and Greece to the south and North Macedonia and Serbia to the west. The country is one of the oldest in Europe, being established in 681 AD, with its name of Bulgaria, being used since its establishment, making it the only European country to never change its name. Along with being one of the oldest countries in Europe, the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv is the oldest inhabited city in Europe dating back to around 6,000 BC. Bulgaria is 110,372km² in area and home to around 6.6 million people, with most of the population speaking the official language of Bulgarian. The capital city of Bulgaria is Sofia.
