Antigua and Barbuda’s national flag was designed by local artist Sir Reginald Samuel and was recognised as the national flag in 1967. The red V making up the left and right sides of the flag, represents victory, hence the V shape, while the red is symbolistic of the island’s residents’ spirit and energy. Making up the centre of the V, are 3 bands of different colours, as well as a sun. The bottom white band is representative of the nation’s beaches, and the blue band above symbolises the Caribbean Sea surrounding the islands. The island’s climate and weather are represented through the inclusion of the sun, and the top black band stands for the soil of the island’s as well as signifies the African heritage of the majority of Antigua and Barbuda’s population.

Antigua and Barbuda is a nation located in the Lesser Antilles region of the Caribbean. Other island nations located around Antigua and Barbuda include Anguilla, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat and Guadeloupe. The islands of Antigua and Barbuda are about 440km² in total size and are home to around 94,000 people. Most of the population speaks Antiguan and Barbudan Creole, however English is the official language of the nation. The capital city of St John’s is located on the island of Antigua. The coastlines of the islands of Antigua and Barbuda have 365 recognised beaches, with the island of Barbuda having beaches made up of pink sand. The pink colour of the sand comes from the shell of a microscopic organism present on some of the island’s beaches. The residents of Antigua and Barbuda love cricket, which is the national sport of the nation.
