History Talk - Greece Flag - Part One
The Flag patterns, adopted by the First National Assembly in 1822 represent the colours of the Greek sky and sea as well as the white clouds and waves.
It was in 1978 when the sea flag was finally adopted as the sole national Flag. The old land flag is still flown at the Old Parliament building in Athens, site of the National Historical Museum, and can still be seen displayed unofficially by private citizens.
The present military form of the coat of arms, as seen on the hats of the Greek Armed Forces.
Religion in Greece
Modern flag of the Greek Orthodox Church, featuring the double-headed eagle.
Often misidentified as the flag of the Byzantine Empire.
The Greek constitution recognizes the Greek Orthodox faith as the dominant religion of its country, guaranteeing religious freedom for all citizens.
The culture of Greece has evolved over thousands of years, through the Classical era, the Hellenistic Period, the Roman Empire and its Greek Eastern successor the Byzantine Empire. Greek culture has also been influenced by the Ottoman Empire but not as much as the independence war did, which has been credited for changing Greece into a single entity of its multi-faceted culture throughout the ages.
