History Talk - France Flag
The meaning of the flag colours, going back hundreds of years can be interpreted in many ways. One is that it represents liberty, equality and fraternity what the French Revolution was all about. Going back to 1789, the storming of the Bastille, the blue and red still stand for the City of Paris; in its coat of arms it displays blue for Saint Martin and red for Saint Denis.
Before the current flag design was adopted, a lily flower kind of symbol was used dating back hundreds of years, called fleur-de-lis in French. No longer in official use the fleur-de-lis is still seen on various flags.
