Saint Georges has been the patron of England since the 13th century. The Red Cross initially used to be just an emblem of England before it became its civil and state flag in the 16th century. England has a colourful cultural background going back about 35,000 years. Its name was originally "Englaland", which comes from an early German tribe called Angles
