Flag of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria

The Flag of the North African Nation of Algeria was adopted 1962. An earlier similar design was used from 1958 to 1962 by the than exiled provisional government. Green is the colour of Islam, while white stands for purity. The Flag baring the so called "Star of Islam" was already on display by a party in Algier, called "Star of North Africa" in 1934.

The coat of arms, with its crescent and the star of Islam is called the Hand of Fatima.

History recalls, that between the 1920th and 1930th, with the support of wealthy Muslims Families a new generation of Muslim leadership came to life with the growing influence of religious reformers. It was than in 1954 that civil unrest against French occupation led to attacks and called for Muslims to fight for an independent democratic state of Algeria led by Islamic principles. It all came ahead in 1991 with the start of the Algerian Civil War.

Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost in fights between political orientated civil groups and governments. French rules finally ended with the independence of Algeria proclaimed in 1962. Algeria today, still baring the signs of an unsettled political climate, tries to overcome cultural unrest and to work towards democracy and prosperity. The last ten years have seen improvements in international relations, a sign for progress.
